LUST by Ev Dylan

Over the past while I have been honored to have profiled the work of one of my favorite photographers, Ev Dylan. In many of those posts I mentioned the book, LUST that Ev has been working on the past couple of years.
The book contains many of the models who have appeared on FH including Mason O'Sullivan, Levi Ward, Sedani, Matthew Hartwig, DW Chase along with many other stunning images.

Levi Ward By Ev Dylan

I have mentioned in the past how much I like when favorites of mine end up working and creating together. I have been following the work of Ev Dylan for awhile now and first showcased his work earlier this year with model DW Chase. Although based in Houston, Ev spends much of his time on the road, traveling and shooting men throughout the country and the globe. Ev has become one of my favorite photographers not just for the beautiful images he creates but because of the emotions they elevate.

I was introduced to model Levi Ward this past spring and showcased his work with jtoPhoto this past June. (see my previous post HERE:). There was something about Levi that has made him one of my favorite models. 'Hard work and I are something that go hand in hand' is one of Levi's motto's. Levi calls himself a 'farm kid' and I think that there is something incredibly genuine and authentic that comes through in all of his work. It is clear Levi's work ethic flows though mind, body and all aspects of his work.



Earlier this fall Ev met up with Levi in Seattle, WA. Ev's sophisticated and tasteful way of presenting models is present in each of his shots of Levi. Levi has a more defined look, classic, professional and beautiful.

Both artists really enjoyed working together. Ev shares that Levi was extremely wonderful to work with and brought a different energy to the shoot he had not experienced in a long while. 'The natural looking body hair was great as well.'.



'Ev is an incredible and truly down to earth guy to work with. Probably one of the most relaxed experiences I've had, especially when it came to more sensitive subject matter. Being an artist myself, I appreciated him allowing me to give my input as well. Full of fantastic ideas and possessing a keen eye, Ev was one of my best experiences as far as modeling is concerned. The fact that he was able to draw out some of my better facial expressions and compose some of my best images was just icing on the cake.'

Matthew Hartwig By Ev Dylan

My last profile of photographer Ev Dylan was last July when I posted about his work with Mason O'Sullivan. Ev is one of my favorite photographers and I always use the words 'quiet beauty' when describing his work. The best way I can put it into words is that Ev's photos slowly ease over and through the veiwer. Ev's work is not meant to hit you over the head or shock you, instead it is meant to become a part of you.



When I posted back in July, Ev was still in the process of completing his book 'Lust'. Ev tells me that he just finished shooting 'Lust' with Matthew Hartwig being the last model he shot for the project.

"Matthew has natural modeling talent and is a total pleasure to work with. I was so happy with the results of our first shoot that I asked him to travel to Texas for a week long shoot to kick off work on my second photo book."

When speaking to Ev about another post I was very pleased when he mentioned Mason O'Sullivan. I have featured Mason on FH in the past and was looking to get to know about a bit more about the man behind the beautiful face.



Some people call him Mase, or Sully, and others just Mason. Mason grew up in Chesapeake, a town near Virginia Beach, and lived there until he went off to college.

"I started acting before I even knew what it was; my mom use to tell me I would push my brother out of the way in home videos to be in front of the camera. My first gig was as part of the Mice Ensemble in a musical production of Cinderella, and ever since I've been hooked. I've been in numerous stage productions and have been working in independent films, etc to build up my reel in hopes of getting an agent."

Mason started modeling about two years ago when he was found at a model search in his hometown.

"I liked how it incorporated acting, letting you take on various characters and emotions with a clean slate each time; after all a camera can't talk back, doesn't have ears and only sees what you give it. Ever since then I've had the pleasure of working with some amazing photographers and teams of people, and look forward to what the future holds."

It has struck me many times when profiling models and photographers how difficult it must be to form trusting relationships with those you work with. Most of us get up and spend 8 hours a day, 5 days a week with the same people. We either get to love them, sometimes hate them. One way or another though we get to know them. With a photographer, trust takes on even more significance. With a model, dependability and the ability to deliver are equally important. Each relies heavily on the skill and talent of the other to come out with a product that showcases the best of both artists.

It is always interesting to find models and photographers who have developed that trust. Although it is possible to get creative without complete trust, to truly be free, both in front of and behind the camera it must be a part of the process.



It quickly became evident that Ev and Mason, through their shoots, their work, their creativity have a connection which comes through clearly in their work together. I asked both men the same three questions and here is what they said:

FH: Describe in a few words what a shoot with the other is like?

Ev Dylan:

"A shoot with Mason is a creative skit... He is full of energy and full of emotion, emotion that can be turned from joy to depression like a light switch."

"A shoot with Ev is like hanging out with a best friend, you just so happen to be taking pictures"



FH: What shot or concept you have shot together is your favorite?

Ev Dylan:

"The school boys concept with Mason is my favorite."

Mason O'Sullivan:

"I like a lot of the shoots Ev and I have done but one of my favorite concepts is actually one that wasn't even planned. We were doing a shoot in D.C. and Ev was taking some three-quarter shots and just starting shooting randomly while i was laughing and talking. We ended up with a series of head shots that were quirky and fun that were still "Model-esk" but very organic"



FH: What is your favorite part of the others work?

Ev Dylan:

"His energy and love for life... It's like working with your childhood friend you haven't seen in a year. Catching up from one concept to the next."

Mason O'Sullivan:

"My favorite part of Ev's work would have to be what it brings out of you as a Model. He creates an environment that's very natural, not to many of the usual bells and whistles that make you look ten times better than you do so it challenges you to not rely on your looks so much and sell your personality by connecting with the camera."

I discovered the beautiful work of Ev Dylan earlier this year when I was profiling model DW Chase. (see that post HERE:) Ev has worked closely with DW and another favorite model of mine, Mason OSullivan. Their work together is exceptional.

On Ev's website fotoicono, DW says about Ev:

'Being comfortable and trusting a photographer are the most important elements when a model chooses to work with someone. Working with Ev Dylan in some ways is like hanging out with a friend, except the purpose of this time spent together is to collaborate on something artistic. Ev Dylan respects the model he is working with as much as he respects his talent and his time spent on each project. The respect DW talks about is visibility evident in Ev's work. There is a 'quiet beauty' in all of his shots, my favorites being his exterior shoots. For some reason 'summer' is present in much of Ev's work with his use natural light, dark does not seem an option!

The Model: Sedani
SD or Sedani as he credits himself on model mayhem has such a beautiful face. When checking out Ev's portfolio the last shot below of Sedani standing in the doorway with the light from the window behind streaming through took my breath away. 21 year old Sedani hails from Texas and says on his MM Page 'I am interested in what this industry has to offer and I'm determined to learn/do what ever is necessary to make it happen.'

With his great face, those eyes and those lips, I am sure we will be seeing much more of SD.
