Here'sssssssssssssss Jonny

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen:

Above: Jonny by EyeBully.

'The subtle click of the camera, the pop of the lights, and the transformation of an ordinary-looking guy into a stunning photograph'
Jonny

Below: Jonny by JR Shot You.

I would bet most people have had times when their self esteem has taken a kick or maybe even gotten a boost when viewing a picture of themselves. I am generally ok with how I look in pictures except when it is a shot taken at work. Fluorescent lighting is not our friend...

Transformation has been a theme that consistently pops up when I communicate with models about their work. I love Jonny's quote about being an ordinary guy who morphs into something special in photographs. I was initially tempted to write there is nothing ordinary about Jonny but the more I thought about it I am more inclined to respect his statement and say we are all actually quite ordinary. It is what we do, how we live our lives and most importantly how we are viewed which can transform us to something extraordinary.

Next two shots by Krisopher Kelly.

Jonny is a writer who lives and works in Brooklyn. Jonny is not really interested in flexing for the camera or showcasing fashion or products. Jonny's main interest is the aforementioned transformation. Jonny loves to work with photographers interested in experimenting with lighting, post-production effects and different looks and concepts. Through this creative process, the 'ordinary' writer, transforms into something more sculptural or painterly.

It's all coming together for Jonathan D. Lovitz

I first discovered the work of actor, singer and model Jonathan D. Lovitz close to two years ago when I was researching the work of another actor. That research took me to a review of The American Stage production of Altar Boyz in Tampa. Jonathan stood out in the cast shots I saw and I went looking for more. Jonathan has an extensive stage resume and when I contacted him about a profile he could not have been nicer.

Jonathan is one of those actors who exudes positive energy that effects those around him. His smile, which I am sure will be mentioned whenever he is written about, is without a doubt contagious. A did a short post earlier this year of Jonathan's performance in The Lonely Goatherd for Broadway Bares Classics at Splash. (see that post HERE:)

I have followed Jonathan's career since and all of his hard work has led to some exciting projects. First off Jonathan just launched his official website which include tons of info and and extensive picture gallery. Some of my favorite shots of Jonathan, including all of those included in this post are by the brilliant Thomas Synnamon.

Jonathan is also a part of Setup Squad premiering this April on Logo.

'No-nonsense Renee Lee has the business solution for people who stink at dating: she hooks them up with professional "wing" women and men from her agency. From the producers of "Pawn Stars," "Setup Squad" is a docu-reality series where relationship misfits get saved from themselves by experts who coach them in 'the art of the pickup.' The "wing" women and men are snappy and sexy: two straight women, a lesbian, and a gay man (hunky Broadway star, Jonathan D. Lovitz) - all fierce and fun and full of opinions about their ineffectual clients. They give clients a crash dating makeover, transforming them from 'shabby & shy' to 'chic & confident'. Then they provide a real shot at love, breaking the ice for them in social settings. Then the real dramas unfold. Will they land the deal? Or get snubbed by their intended target? And what happens when one of the experts gets a little too cozy with their client? Find out in this highly charged reality series combining the most sizzling parts of dating shows with the most electric elements of workplace dramas.'

It's all coming together!

In Search Of Apollo

As it usually happens, my discovery of Apollo, Tony Apollo, came about through researching the work of another. The first shot I saw of Tony was the shot by Tony Veloz that I used above as 'pic of the day'. I knew instantly I wanted the shot on FH. Besides being an incredibly hot image there was something about the model that was both fascinating and unique. Not sure if was facial expression, the hair, the piercing or all of the above. I do know that I wanted to find out more.

Finding out more was not immediately possible. My usual forms of research did not lead me to contact info for Tony. Fortunately I came across One Angry Queer who helped Tony and I connect. One Angry Queer is actually fellow blogger Ian Awesome who had posted some shots of his friend Tony. Not finding Tony directly was actually fortunate as I have enjoyed spending time on Ian's blog. Ian writes the type of passion filled, thought provoking posts I wish I could. I encourage you all to spend some time checking out One Angry Queer for yourself!

Although I could not contact Tony quickly, if you live in Baltimore your bound to have heard of him...

"If you haven't heard, Tony Apollo is somewhat of an urban legend in Baltimore... you know, the kind that ends with everyone being hacked to death by a mental patient in a rubber mask. No one knows how old he really is, he's just always been here. If you ask your grandparents, they're sure to remember him boxing for nickels on the Block; ask your parents and they might recall him selling Brazilian tree frogs outside arcades in Towson..."

In Greek Mythology, Apollo was not just the the God of light, the sun, truth and prophecy but often forgotten was he was also the God of music, poetry, and the arts. Tony Apollo lives up to his name sake as modeling is just the beginning of Tony's interest in the arts. He describes himself as a performer, artist, activist, gender-deviant, writer, savant and strongman.

'I’ve been conflicted about definitively deciding on how I want to characterize my performance identity. Deciding means committing, and I enjoy the freedom that comes with performing for the act, and not as a character.'
Tony Apollo

Although Tony may not want to commit, when spending time on his blog I think it is artist that stands out to me. Although Tony has stood in front of the lens of some very talented photographers, it is when at work, when creating, that he is most interesting and most definitely most beautiful. The shot below is my favorite shot of Tony, incredible shot!

Tony was born in Baltimore in 1988 and says he has yet to escape, save for brief stints in Jamaica and Japan. He graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art (class of '10) magna cum laude. In 2010 he interned for Big Huge Games in Hunt Valley MD as a World Art intern. Tony performs regularly at 'seedy venues', and works as a freelance illustrator, portrait painter and makeup artist. Tony says he plans to attend graduate school by the Fall of 2012 where he hopes to complete both an MA and MFA. He hopes to one day contribute to the social and intellectual development of gaming as Art. Currently writes for Baltimore OUTLoud!

Photos (Top photo and those below of Tony by Carlos Pereyra.

It is really interesting that my search for Tony Apollo was actually a success. It is especially surprising since after I found him I learned he does not actually exist.

'Tony is not me. He is the me I can never become and will never want to. He can be anything I want him to be. I’ve never had this option and, honestly, its terrifies me. I plan to use him as a tool. If I can stand on a stage as this other person and make people think while making them laugh at me, I’ll feel accomplished.'

Seems to me Tony Apollo is really that person inside all of us, that strong, creative part of ourselves we spend so much time trying to find, while at the same time trying to hide. My initial instinct after seeing that first shot by Tony Veloz certainly was spot on.

Tony Apollo by Tony Veloz

As said above, it was a shot by Washington based photographer Tony Veloz (used as 'pic of the day') that first introduced me to Tony Apollo. I have showcased the work of Tony Veloz previously on FH (most recently with Terrel Fraser).

The adjectives that spring to mind whenever I see a shot by Tony Veloz are clean, crisp, vibrant and classy. I think it is his attention to detail that is most distinctive in Tony's work. While most of us are only able to focus on one thing at a time, Tony, through his lens appears to zoom in on each and every inch of what is in front of him.

Some of this series Gray Area was originally posted on ROCK MY BLOG HERE: Thanks to Tony Apollo for sending on more of his work with Tony Veloz. Be sure to check out more of Tony Veloz's work at his site HERE:

The Face: Terrel Fraser

It is of course a given that being fit, working out and keeping your body in top form is essential in the modeling world. One factor that models have less control over yet is most important is their face. Not just how it looks but what it expresses. 25 year old Terrel Fraser describes himself as a 'fresh new face in the industry' with a face uniquely beautiful and expressive with features brought together from his Italian German and African American heritage. Terrel's gorgeous brown eyes express a sexiness and humanity which bring something special to each of his images.

New to the industry, I was impressed with the quality of work Terrel has already put together for his portfolio. Terrel has worked with some of my favorite photographers and many of whom I have profiled on FH. Here is a look at some of my favorite shots from Terrel's port.

First three shots by Guillermo Real.

'Guillermo is La based now and a fairly new photog, talented he's studied it for many years. We had a great beach shoot where he did it all, styling, lighting as well as taking the shots directed. Very talented!'

Portrait Below by TARRICE LOVE:

'Great photog and very very underrated! He doesn't get the notoriety he deserves yet, but make no mistake he is talented! Also does it all; style, shoots, everything to get a great image and funny as hell lol'

Four beautiful shots below by Tony Veloz.

'Tony Veloz is super talented DC based photog and draws from his extensive experience in shooting woman and somehow translates it and applies it to men yet still keeps it masculine. Love his work and also looking forward to working more with him'

Below: What I think has become Terrel's signature shot, the great image below by one of my favorite photographers, David Arnot.

'David Arnot is an all around pro it was a great shoot! I am looking forward to working with him again.'

Matt Eldracher!

20 year old Matt Eldracher was in a close race with Tyson Smith through most of the contest and although Tyson easily took the final round, overall Matt came in with the most votes! Congratulations Matt!

Matt will be getting together with Chris Teel over the next couple of months to plan and then to shoot! Look for the results on FH as soon as they are available!!!

Model Search: End Of The Road!

Today marks the end of voting for Model Search 2011 from Chris Teel and FH! As the contest began with Chris's shots of model Corey Kirk, Chris and I thought it a good idea to end on the same incredible note.

We have learned a lot through the process and given it was our first time putting on a contest thanks for putting up with the bumps along the road. I know for myself the voting went on a bit too long and was too choppy and if there is a model search 2012 there will be some changes.

Thanks to our wonderful panel of judges, all those who voted and especially all of the models, whether they made the final 10 or not who participated. Chris and I were thrilled with responses we got, especially given it was our first time.

Although the voting has been fierce a few models appeared to get the most attention from their families, friends and FH voters. In order to create a wee bit of mystery, we are ending the voting this afternoon with the results being kept a mystery until Chris and I reveal the winner. We have narrowed it down now to the top 5 finalists.

Corey The Bear by Chris Teel

Corey The Bear:
Corey Kirk by Chris Teel

Chris has shot Corey many times and in every shoot you can see the trust that comes through their friendship and close working relationship. Love this recent shoot by Chris. Corey, who always looks so incredible, strong and confident creates an entirely different feel with the use of the bears, sexy, light and fun.
